What Is an RSPS? Complete Beginner's Guide
By RuneRank · Published 10 Sept 2026
RSPS stands for RuneScape Private Server. It is a separately hosted game server, run by an independent team, that plays like RuneScape but is not operated by Jagex. Your official RuneScape account has nothing to do with it — you make a brand new account on each server you try.
How an RSPS is different from the official game
Rates and progression
Most private servers speed things up. Experience rates, drop rates and starter gear are usually more generous, so what takes months in the official game can take days. Some servers deliberately stay slow; most do not.
Content
Some servers copy the official game as closely as they can. Others add original bosses, skills, zones and item tiers you will not find anywhere else. Those are called custom servers.
Size
A private server community is small by comparison — dozens to a few thousand players. That means you will recognise names, staff will actually reply to you, and the economy is easier to understand.
Cost
There is no membership. Servers fund hosting through cosmetic stores, donations and advertising.
How you actually join one
- Find a server. Ranked lists like RuneRank's top servers exist for exactly this.
- Open the server's listing and visit its official website.
- Download the client from that website, or use the web client if it offers one.
- Create a fresh username and password.
- Log in and follow the starter tutorial.
That is the whole process. It usually takes under five minutes.
Staying safe
- Never reuse your RuneScape password, or any password you use elsewhere.
- Only download clients from the server's official site or Discord.
- Be cautious with any server asking for more information than an email address.
- Treat "double your gold" offers in-game the same way you would anywhere: as a scam.
The vocabulary you will run into
- 317 / 474 / OSRS revision — which version of the game the server is built on
- Pre-EOC — before the 2012 combat rework; the classic combat system
- Eco / economy server — item values matter, trading and grinding are the point
- Spawn server — you can spawn gear, so PvP starts immediately
- Ironman — an account mode where you cannot trade and must earn everything yourself
- Vote — clicking a daily vote button on a top list, usually rewarded in-game
Choosing your first server
Go for something busy and beginner friendly rather than the most unusual thing you can find. A well-populated OSRS-style or economy server teaches you the ropes fastest. When you know what you enjoy, branch out into PvM, Ironman or custom servers.
