Are RSPS Safe? A Practical Download and Account Checklist
By RuneRank · Published 7 Oct 2026

An RSPS is not automatically safe because it is popular, highly ranked or listed on a top list. Private servers distribute their own software and manage their own accounts. Treat choosing a client and protecting your login as separate decisions from choosing enjoyable gameplay.
You cannot prove a download is harmless from a banner, a vote count or a clean-looking website. You can, however, reduce avoidable risks with a few practical checks. This guide focuses on software and account safety, not legal advice or a security certification for any server.
Start with the download source
Open the server's official website through its RuneRank listing and check that the address matches the server you intended to visit. A listing link is a starting point for verification, not an endorsement of every file it serves.
Avoid clients sent in unsolicited direct messages, random file mirrors and search advertisements claiming to be an urgent update. If the server changes its download address, confirm the change through its established website or support channel before installing anything.
Ask who maintains the launcher and whether there are current release notes. A long history does not eliminate risk, but an unexplained new executable or abandoned update process deserves additional scrutiny.
Do not turn security warnings into installation instructions
Keep your operating system and security tools updated. If a download is blocked or flagged, stop and investigate. Do not disable antivirus, Google Play Protect or macOS protections simply because someone says private-server clients always trigger warnings.
Google Play Protect checks apps from outside Google Play as well as store apps, and Google recommends keeping it on. 1
Apple warns that running software that has not been signed and notarized can expose your computer and personal information to malware. A warning is not proof that a file is malicious, but it is not proof of a harmless false positive either. Ask for a supported, trustworthy build rather than following a blanket bypass guide. 2
A scanner finding no problem is useful information, not an absolute guarantee. Never upload passwords, recovery codes or other private account information to a scanning or support service.
Use separate credentials from day one
Create a unique password for each private server. Do not reuse your email, RuneRank or official RuneScape account password. A password manager makes this practical without needing to memorize every login.
Enable two-factor authentication where the service offers it, and protect the email account used for recovery. Keep recovery codes somewhere private. A server administrator or support helper should not need your email password, authenticator codes or official game recovery information to fix a private-server login.
An RSPS account is separate from your official RuneScape account. You should not be handing an unfamiliar private-server launcher your official login to start playing.
Watch for permission and payment red flags
A game client requesting unrelated access to your accounts or security settings deserves an explanation before you continue. Be especially cautious about remote-control software, instructions to run unknown scripts, or someone asking you to share your screen while passwords are visible.
Before donating, read the server's payment and refund terms and verify the checkout address. Keep receipts. Do not assume a private-server character, item purchase or account balance will last indefinitely.
If you already installed something suspicious
Stop using the client. Follow your operating system or security provider's instructions for checking and removing unsafe software. If you suspect credentials were exposed, use a trusted device to change affected passwords, secure your email and review account sessions.
Do not reopen the file repeatedly to see whether the warning disappears. Tell the server's established support team what happened without sending passwords or private recovery information.
A five-point check before you play
- I have verified the server's download address.
- I am not bypassing a security warning just to launch it.
- My private-server password is unique.
- I understand the permissions and any payment terms.
- I know where to find established support if something goes wrong.
Once those checks are satisfied, compare gameplay through RuneRank's server list and our guide to finding a good RSPS. For device-specific checks, read RSPS on mobile or playing on Mac. A ranking measures visibility and voting activity; it does not certify download safety.
