Your RSPS Advertisement Might Be Too Long. Here's Why That Matters.

Your RSPS Advertisement Might Be Too Long. Here's Why That Matters.

Look, I get it. You spent months building your server and you wanna show everything off. Every boss, every minigame, every custom feature you stayed up till 3am finishing. So when it's time to advertise, you write it all down — and end up with a Discord post that's longer than most essays.

But when someone opens Discord and sees 40 lines of text, how much of that do you really think they're gonna read?

People skim. It's just how it is

This isn't me guessing. The Nielsen Norman Group has been studying how people read on screens for years, and their findings are kinda brutal: on an average webpage, people read roughly 20% of the words, with 28% being the upper estimate for an average visit. Their eyetracking research also shows people don't read line by line — they scan in patterns, jumping between headings, first words and whatever catches their eye.

Now, important honesty moment: those studies are about webpages, not Discord ads specifically. Nobody has scientifically proven that a shorter RSPS ad always beats a longer one. But think about your own behavior for a second. When you're scrolling a server-list Discord or an advertising channel, are you reading every word of every post? Or are you skimming until something grabs you?

Exactly. Your potential players are doing the same thing to your ad.

The first few lines do all the work

If someone gives your ad a few seconds — and that's genuinely all most people give — then your first two or three lines are basically your whole advertisement. Everything below that is a bonus for the people you already hooked.

That means the top of your ad needs to answer one question fast: why should I care? Not your full boss list. Not your donation deals. The single most interesting thing about your server, said clearly.

A good headline plus one strong reason to play beats a wall of features every time. And once someone's interested, give them an obvious next step — a clear "Play Now" link and a Discord invite, not buried under six paragraphs of hype.

Show your best, not your everything

Here's the mindset shift that helps most owners: your advertisement is not documentation. It's a movie trailer.

A trailer doesn't show you the whole film. It shows you the best thirty seconds and makes you want the rest. Your ad should do the same — pick your two or three strongest features, the stuff that actually makes your server different, and lead with those. The other forty features still exist. Players will find them on your website, your wiki, or in game. The ad's only job is to get them there.

That's also the difference between an ad and a proper info page. Someone reading your website or a guide expects detail — they came looking for it. Someone scrolling Discord gave you a few seconds. Same server, two different audiences, two different lengths.

A quick comparison

Here's what I mean in practice. Both of these are made-up examples — not any real server — but you've definitely seen both in the wild.

Copy the short version and make it your own.

Same server. Same features. But the second one respects the reader's time. You can actually tell what the server is about in three seconds, and the links are right there when you want them.

A few things that make the long version harder to read:

  • Emoji overload. A couple of emojis add flavor. Fifteen per line turns your ad into visual noise where nothing stands out.
  • Every feature listed. When everything is highlighted, nothing is. Your best content gets lost between the filler.
  • Multiple calls to action. "Join now! Vote! Donate! Use this code!" — pick one thing you want them to do.
  • Walls of identical lines. Scanners need anchors. Short lines with clear structure give their eyes somewhere to land.

How long should your ad actually be?

There's no magic number, and anyone who tells you there is is making it up. But here's what we'd suggest as a starting point — these are RuneRank's practical recommendations, not scientific limits:

Advertisement typeSuggested length
Quick Discord promotion30–60 words
Standard server advertisement60–100 words
Detailed server introduction100–200 words
Full feature breakdownDedicated website page

Treat these as defaults to test against, not rules. Your community might respond better to something longer or shorter, and the only way to know is to try it.

Test it. Measure it. Trust the clicks.

The owners who get advertising right treat it like an experiment. Write two versions of your ad — maybe one short and punchy, one a bit more detailed — and try them at different times or in different channels. Then actually look at what happened.

And here's the key part: measure players, not post size. A massive ad that gets scrolled past does nothing for you. A short one that gets clicks and brings in ten new players who actually stay? That's a win. Track where your new players come from if you can — invite links, analytics, just asking them. Clicks and new players are the only scoreboard that matters.

A good banner helps here too. One clean visual next to a short ad usually does more than three extra paragraphs — people process images instantly, walls of text not so much.

The takeaway

At the end of the day, I know how much work goes into building an RSPS. You wanna show people everything you've created, and I get that.

But your advertisement doesn't need to explain your entire server.

It just needs to give someone a reason to check it out.

Keep it simple, show off what makes your server different, and let your website do the rest.

If you're working on your promotion right now, our guide on how to advertise an RSPS covers where to post and how the platforms work. And when you're ready to put your server in front of thousands of players, get it on the list — that's what we're here for.
