Best Old School RuneScape Private Servers in 2026
By RuneRank · Published 10 Sept 2026
Old School RuneScape private servers try to recreate the 2007-era game rather than invent a new one. If you already know OSRS and want the same feel with faster progression, different rates, or content Jagex never shipped, this is the category you want.
What makes a server "OSRS" rather than just old
The label gets used loosely. A genuine OSRS-style server usually means:
- A modern OSRS revision client rather than an early 317 base
- Interfaces, skills and combat that behave the way live OSRS does
- Content that exists in OSRS today — raids, slayer bosses, current gear tiers
- Frequently, RuneLite-style plugins or an official RuneLite build
A 317-based server can absolutely be fun, but it will feel different: older interfaces, simpler combat scripts, and a smaller content pool. Neither is better, they are just different eras. If you want the older feel, look at pre-EOC servers instead.
Things worth checking before you start an account
Rates
"1x rates" means an OSRS-speed grind, which is a big commitment on a server that might not exist in two years. Most people are happier somewhere between 5x and 25x. Check whether rates are consistent or whether the server leans on permanent bonus weekends.
Content depth
Ask what is actually completed. A server can advertise raids and have one of the three. The honest ones list exactly which bosses, minigames and skills are finished.
Client and safety
Only download from the server's own website or its official Discord. Never run a client from a random file host, and never reuse your real RuneScape password on a private server.
Population
OSRS servers live and die on group content. Raids, Wilderness activity and a working Grand Exchange all need people. Check the player count and, more usefully, log in and see.
Where the ranking comes from
The servers listed on RuneRank are ordered by votes cast by players this month, so the order reflects who is playing right now rather than who has been listed longest. Anything removed, banned or shut down drops out on its own.

OSRS or a private server?
They answer different itches. Official OSRS gives you a stable economy, a huge population and content that keeps arriving. A private server gives you faster progression, unusual content, small communities and no membership cost. Plenty of people play both. We wrote a longer comparison in OSRS vs RSPS.

- Pick two servers from the OSRS category and skim their listing descriptions.
